What does NEETs mean?

The acronym #NEETs refers to young people aged between 15-29 years old neither in employment nor in education and training.

What are the main causes of this increased phenomenon?

• The economic and financial crisis in the late 2000s

• The COVID-19 pandemic

The European Union is engaged in tackling this problem, and sets an Eu-level target with the objective of reducing the number of NEETs to less than 9% by 2030. In 2021 was identified around 13,1%, and some Member States reached the 2030 goal already.

Eurostat identifies another issue linked with the issue concerning the high frequency of changing jobs and the increased time to get established on the job market.
